We chart how consumer attitudes towards everyday transport are changing, especially among younger cohorts: increasingly rejecting car-centric lifestyles, embracing walkable communities and adopting micromobility (bikes and scooters). People are reconsidering vehicle ownership in favour of alternative means of access, while car owners are moving (in fits and starts) towards an electric vehicle (EV) future.

Evolving Towards EVs

Fewer consumers will own cars in the longer term: globally, 46% of people say they’re open to replacing their private vehicles with other modes of transport in the coming decade (McKinsey, 2023). Younger generations in particular are drawn to alternatives, including car subscriptions and car-sharing (spanning peer-to-peer and on-demand rentals) – and myriad offerings are arising to meet this opportunity.

New Views on Vehicle Ownership

Fewer consumers will own cars in the longer term: globally, 46% of people say they’re open to replacing their private vehicles with other modes of transport in the coming decade (McKinsey, 2023). Younger generations in particular are drawn to alternatives, including car subscriptions and car-sharing (spanning peer-to-peer and on-demand rentals) – and myriad offerings are arising to meet this opportunity.

Cooling Attitudes Towards the Car-Centric Culture

Consumers increasingly want to live and shop in pedestrian-friendly places that decentre cars. But even as car-free lifestyles become aspirational for many, proposals to promote active travel (such as walking and cycling) and walkable districts (like the 15-Minute City) have become politically polarising, with some arguing these policies restrict freedom of movement.

Mass Adoption of Micromobility

Micromobility, which references human- and electric-powered lightweight transport such as bicycles and scooters (shared or privately owned), is becoming ingrained in city living. Fuelled by fast adoption of e-bikes, transport habits are quickly shifting – a boon for the environment as more people opt for alternatives to driving for short commutes.

Evolving Towards EVs

Driving is in transition as EVs progress from niche into the mainstream. Battery-powered vehicles are estimated to reach 16.2% of global car sales in 2024, from 12% in 2023 (S&P, 2023). However, while EVs are crucial to decarbonising road transport, momentum is slowing, with several ongoing obstacles (including political attitudes) keeping consumers away.
