Pinterest has published its annual Pinterest Predicts report, based on global search data gathered over a two-year period (2021-23). We highlight the need-to-know takeaways for the food and beverage sector.

1. Melty Mashups: According to Pinterest, Gen Xers and boomers will crave moreish food fusions in 2024, with searches for culinary mashups – such as “cheeseburger tacos” (+255%), “carbonara ramen” (+165%) and “burger quesadilla” (+80%) – rising over the past two years.

We already tapped into this trend in The New Global Palate, where we explore surprising and often polarising flavour pairings: think mustard with watermelon, or Snickers bars with pickles.

2. Tropic Like It’s Hot: Pinterest predicts the emergence of a strong tropical theme across food and drink, home décor and fashion in the coming year, especially among boomers and Gen Zers. From 2021 to 2023, searches for “pineapple mocktails” increased by 70%, while those for “crushed pineapple upside-down cake” grew by 50%, “coconut aesthetic” by 35% and “Hawaiian sheet pan chicken” also by 35%.

3. Kitschens: This year, Gen Xers and boomers will welcome a quirky, kitschy aesthetic for their kitchen interiors, inspired by eclectic/retro accessories and vibrant hues. Searches like “eccentric kitchen” (+160%), “kitschy kitchen” (+75%) and “retro pink kitchens” (+40%) all surged between 2021 and 2023. We explore this theme in The Future Kitchen 24/25.

4. Cafécore: In 2024, boomers and Gen Xers will level up their at-home coffee making, as searches for “coffee bar styling” soared 1,125% from 2021 to 2023. Keywords “café aesthetic” (+820%), “coffee station décor” (145%) and “café chalkboard” (+50%) also ascended. See the five key consumer cohorts aligning with this prediction identified in Coffee’s Devoted Consumers.
