An artful approach to individual expression and explorations in sensory design were among the defining features at this year’s 3 Days of Design (Copenhagen, June 18-20) alongside a focus on elemental materiality and efforts to elegantly reimagine waste. We select the standout colour and material trends from across the city. Also, read our Product Trends report.
Echoing a desire for lightness, clarity and invigoration, the sensory qualities of light played a crucial role in designs and installations. Poetic colour narratives combine with dynamic, reflective surfaces, while explorations into translucency infuse spaces with a comforting ambience.

One of the more clear-cut sustainability narratives across the city was a focus on beautifying waste. Overlooked and difficult-to-recycle resources have been transformed into curated collections of refined new products, where exclusivity, timelessness and quality serve as key selling points.
The restorative qualities of nature were a guiding theme for many brands, and a deeply tactile, elemental direction emerged in response. Rich and earthy colour palettes are elevated by organic surface textures, while age-old materials – like bronze, stone and glass – feature in worn and rugged finishes.
In a similar vein to emerging trends noted at Milan Design Week, a shift towards more expressive interiors saw artful, decorative and charming designs being embraced. Beautiful craft, like embroidery, plays a leading role, alongside ornamental woodwork, whimsical print and pattern, and bold, playful forms.
