The Zeitgeist 2021
Research for our S/S 23 Directions began in early 2021, looking at the evolving zeitgeist – across the socio, cultural, political, technological and design innovation spheres – that would inform future product development. Here are some of our key takeaways.
- Diversity and inclusivity are hot topics
- Lockdown restrictions inspire global travel yearnings
- Interest in personal heritage is rising
- Crafts continue to enthral consumers
- Heirloom purchases inform sustainable spending
July 2021 - Stylus Direction Gather S/S 23
In 2021 we predicted that personal heritage and self-expression, mixed with a growing interest in reuse and longevity, would be championed in an eclectic aesthetic. Rich pigmented colour, intriguing material mixes including the use of deadstock, and tasselled and tufted textiles steered this storied direction.
2022 - Collections for S/S 23
We've seen our Gather forecast confirmed in an abundance of craft-focused luxury collections that honour global art styles and making techniques, with organic materials in earthen shades lending designs a sense of origin and locality. Tactility is ramped up in unexpected rattan and roping applications, and decorative flourishes have a handmade character for products with heirloom appeal.
2023 - Mass Retail
S/S 23 saw Gather resounding across mass market ranges by retailers and brands focussing on decorative designs and crafted details, encompassing weaving, embroidery, tufting and patchworking. Interesting upcycling initiatives and updated vintage aesthetics also supported eclectic styling and a layered, timeless quality.
