Our Pop Culture Pulse is a monthly download of the buzziest cultural developments, emerging fandoms and audience trends. This month, we dive into Netflix’s new Moments feature helping fans broadcast their latest obsessions, the TikTok-esque new platform within the decentralised social media network Fediverse, and how Spotify is helping nurture the glocal potential in Mexico’s music scene.
The Fediverse, a collection of connected, decentralised social networks (i.e. not controlled by a central entity), is soon to add its own short-form video platform, Loops. As appetite for social-first, single-purpose platforms grows (see Pop Culture & Media Futures 24/25), decentralised social media attracts users with alternative platforms, offering legacy features without the perceived downsides.

Netflix’s new Moments tool is handing fan communities a major win by letting users clip their favourite Netflix shows and films to share on social media. By getting behind clip culture and the ‘fan edit’ (user-made and shared spliced entertainment clips designed to signal appreciation), Netflix is acknowledging fan content’s key role in generating buzz, further blurring the line between entertainment and social media.
Global streams of Mexican music have risen by more than 220% since 2019 (Spotify, 2024). Recognising its surging fandom, Spotify is leaning into the vibrant Mexican music scene’s growing glocal potential with events in Los Angeles and a two-day music festival (Mexcla) in Mexico City on November 2-3, featuring a line-up of exclusively Mexican artists and spotlighting the country’s breadth of musical diversity.
