Pinterest’s annual prediction report analyses global search data on the platform over a two-year period. The results spotlight the food and drink trends set to spark consumer interest in 2023. Stylus highlights the key takeaways.

  1. You Only Live Once: Now that pandemic-induced lockdown restrictions have eased, Pinterest predicts that boomers and Gen Xers (alongside younger family members and friends) will be eager to celebrate major milestones. This is validated by the rise in searches for ‘100th birthday party ideas’ (+50%) and ‘silver 25th anniversary cake’ (+245%) from 2020-22.

  2. Botanical Bakes: Gen X and Y home bakers are turning to nature for culinary design inspiration. With searches for ‘herbal apothecary aesthetic’ soaring by 1,025% between 2020-22, people now have more interest in ‘wildflower cupcakes’ (+110%) and ‘purple floral cake’ (+85%).

  1. Free Spirits: Pinterest projects that Gen X will drive the low and no-ABV trend. As people pivot towards a more moderate approach to imbibing, they’re looking to jazz up their booze-free beverages. Searches for ‘fancy non-alcoholic drinks’ rose by 220% from 2020-22, while ‘creative cocktails presentation’ was up by 555%, and ‘fancy ice cubes’ by 75%.

  2. Vitamin Seaweed: Health-conscious consumers are turning to algae and seaweed species to support various wellness concerns, ranging from immunity and metabolism to menopausal symptoms and muscle recovery. Pinterest saw searches for ‘seaweed snacks recipes’ surge by 245% from 2020-22, with both ‘green algae’ and ‘nori recipes’ increasing by 60%.
