The world’s first algae-blended coffee has recently hit the market. Kafelina, available in the UK, blends coffee with algae that’s produced indoors using a bioreactor and LEDs instead of sunlight. Unlike natural daytime and night-time light spectrums, this system ensures that production cycles occur 22-24 hours a day, 365 days a year – maximising yield.

The resulting algae (a superfood we’ve been tracking since 2012) is packed with vitamins and minerals – making it appealing to wellness-seeking consumers who wish to add more nutrients into their daily routines. In addition, the product is sold in 100% biodegradable and compostable packaging.

In our 2018 report Trans-Industry Ingredients, we stated that algae would become an increasingly valuable and dexterous food source as developers harness more sustainable and abundant resources. New algae-based products continuing to enter the retail space – such as Kafelina and Grow-Your-Own Algae Kits (which enable families to produce edible algae at home) – are validating this theory
