Swiss multinational Nestlé has extended its range of food and drink products aimed at consumers on weight loss drugs like Ozempic with the launch of a protein shake in the US. The Boost Pre-Meal Hunger Support drink promotes an increase in the appetite-supressing GLP-1 hormone and is designed to be taken in conjunction with GLP-1 medications.

About one in eight (12%) American adults have taken a GLP-1 agonist at some point, while 6% were actively taking them as of spring 2024 (KFF, 2024). Ozempic and Wegovy are already household names, and the market for these weight management drugs is still expanding.

Similar to Nestlé’s earlier Ozempic-friendly Vital Pursuit range, which includes sandwich melts, frozen pizzas and protein-enriched pasta, the new nutritional drink targets consumers on GLP-1 weight control medication. It supports weight loss and management through the “natural GLP-1 [increase], which helps in controlling the feeling of hunger” when consumed between 10 to 30 minutes before a meal, according to Stefan Palzer, chief technology officer at Nestlé.

The company has patented the product, which consist of a mix of peptides and contains one gram of sugar, 10 grams of whey protein and only 45 calories per serving. Its formula is based on proprietary research, which suggests that whey protein microgel has a beneficial effect on both blood sugar control and metabolism.

Since their roll-out, the shakes can be found at select stores of US-based retailer CVS and on Amazon, where a pack of four currently costs $10.99.
