Regulating and tracking one’s blood glucose levels as an avenue to a more efficient metabolism, fewer cravings, more energy, reduced inflammation and less brain fog is becoming a mainstream consumer concern. As such, a new wave of wellness brands have developed supplements and snacks designed to keep blood sugar spikes at bay.

Wearable glucose trackers for non-diabetic consumers – like those marketed by British start-up Zoe (which had a 200,000-strong waiting list when it launched in 2022) and its American competitor Lingo – have greatly contributed to this groundswell of interest as users tweak their diets based on continuously available data.

Ingredients like bitter melon, cinnamon and mulberry leaf, which have been clinically proven to regulate blood sugar levels in prediabetic and diabetic consumers, are making a star turn here. French influencer, author and biochemist Jessie Inchauspé’s (aka @GlucoseGoddess) new Anti-Spike Formula capsules contain white mulberry leaf, cinnamon and lemon extracts and a blend of polyphenol-rich vegetable extracts and claim to reduce post-meal glucose spikes by up to 40% when consumed pre-meal.

Meanwhile, Canadian supplement brand Organika has launched its new Bitter Melon for Blood Sugar Control capsules, which it claims can help the body metabolise carbohydrates and fats and assist with healthy weight management.

Taking an alternative approach is American supplement company Touchstone Essentials. Its new Gluco Control capsules have been formulated with an enzyme that converts glucose molecules from food into a form of resistant starch and reduces the amount of sugar that’s released into the body.

Snack brands are also taking note. Global start-up One Bite’s Protein & Collagen Low Glycemic no-added-sugar, high-fibre bars have been developed to help balance and maintain blood glucose levels while offering the benefits of functional ingredients like rosemary, blueberry extract and Japanese marine collagen.
