With 47% of US dermatologists feeling their training didn’t prepare them to treat Black skin (Neutrogena, 2021), many students enter the industry not understanding how to effectively treat the needs of people of colour. Tackling this, British label Haeckels’ new programme equips aspiring beauty therapists with the skills and education to drive tangible change in the sector.

The Haeckels Academy in Margate, England offers four bespoke skincare courses with values of community, inclusivity and sustainability at the core. Led by the brand’s therapist Lottie Rowlatt, the courses comprise Facial Massage and Skincare (VTCT Level 2), Massage Therapy, Facial Electrotherapy (Level 3), and Certificate in Facial Treatment for Skin of Colour. These initial modules are currently offered complimentary to young local students, and a full rollout will follow in March 2023.

“The purpose of this Beauty Guild-accredited course is to develop knowledge on how to successfully provide facial treatment for clients with different skin types, moving away from specifics around white skin,” Rowlatt told UK magazine Wallpaper*. “We build on the existing knowledge of facial skincare, gaining [a] thorough understanding of the specific needs of skin of colour and how to get the best results for your clients.”

As we highlight in Black Beauty in Focus, healthcare inequities lead to misdiagnoses and untreated conditions in melanin-rich skin, and brands need to actively address this serious void in education about how such conditions affect Black skin. The Haeckels Academy is helping disrupt and foster this change within the industry, creating a more inclusive future that more businesses should be prioritising.
