Lift Labs, the San Francisco-based health tech firm, is expanding its range of electronic cutlery for those with motion disorders such as Parkinson's disease, the company revealed at the inaugural Lions Health festival last week.

John Redmond, the company's product design engineer, announced plans to extend the Liftware line to include forks, soup spoons and keyholders in the coming months. The first Liftware products – battery-operated spoons that stabilise hand tremors – started shipping in September 2013, priced at $295.

Motion sensors in the spoons' handles detect tremors, which are then analysed by algorithms and cancelled with movements in the opposite direction, carried out by actuators. In so doing, the products help their users' stay independent for longer.

The Liftware products are the latest in a string of tech-enhanced cutlery innovations that help people eat, diet and savour food. At the International CES in Las Vegas last year, French tech company Hapi unveiled Hapifork, an electronic fork that vibrates if you eat too fast – a haptic cue to promote mindful eating.
