UK-based digital media company Starship has created a hyperreal virtual reality cookery simulation using Samsung's virtual reality headset, Gear VR. The technology, called CyberCook, enables users to create recipes from around the world using virtual ingredients in real-time.
CyberCook aims to help users learn to create a variety of international dishes by allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the cooking process. Using a host of simulated techniques and virtual utensils while listening to step-by-step instructions, budding chefs add ingredients to a pan by tapping the touch pad on the side of the virtual reality headset, and are rewarded points for mastering different recipes.
While currently only available for VR, CyberCook is expected to be ready for use on mobile and tablet devices in the coming weeks.
LA-based designer Jinsoo An has created a similar virtual dining experience. Project Nourished uses Oculus Rift headsets, motion-detecting cutlery and aromatic diffusers to mimic the taste, texture and smell of different foods. The project aims to allow participants to taste things they may not usually be able to try due to dietary requirements or food allergies. For more on this, see Virtual Reality Dining.
Brands are also turning to virtual reality in order to provide real-time, immersive experiences to consumers, as explored in Marriott's 4D Travel Experience and VR-Powered Audi Showroom Experience.
