Wellness Takeaways from the Global Wellness Institute’s Trend Day

In 2025, wellness will prioritise sociable hobbies, teen-inclusive retreats and science-backed therapies, said speakers at the “Trend Day” of Miami-based non-profit Global Wellness Institute (GWI) in NYC on January 28. Stylus details how these themes will evolve in the year ahead.
- Less Phones, More Fun: “New analogue clubs and salons are rewriting nightlife and what wellness means,” said Beth McGroarty, GWI’s Director of Research. McGroarty explored how people are reducing time spent with tech in favour of enriching group activities. In China, young people are attending lectures at academic bars, tufting studios are trending in India and social pottery classes are popular in London.
- Tomorrow’s Youth-Targeted Wellness: Globally, under-18s are experiencing increasingly poor mental health. “The wellness industry is just starting to treat teens with the seriousness of their problems,” said McGroarty. Teen girls can learn about mindfulness and self-care during phone-free, nature getaways with British group Rewire, while British-Moroccan retreat Resurface supports teens experiencing stress and trauma during its surf retreats. Bringing mindfulness to kids, Australian group Smiling Minds is launching mental health education programmes for primary schools in 2025.

- The Credibility Gap: Wellness interventions are caught between consumer desire for flashy therapies and the need for science-backed credibility. GWI spotlighted how this paradox is influencing supplements, which are becoming status symbols while also being “plagued by a lack of regulations and science washing”, as McGroarty said.
Demanding trust, more consumers are using platforms like Fullscript and Suppco (both American). The former offers doctor-vetted protocols, while the latter assesses the quality of users’ supplement routines. Meanwhile, British beauty brand Lyma launched its Ingredients Index in January 2025 to help consumers identify the dosages and ingredients with clinically-studied effects.
