Following in the footsteps of the make-up, hair and bodycare categories developing hybrid products with skin- and scalp-nourishing properties, dental care brands are now repositioning toothpaste as skincare for your mouth.

Dental brands are adopting buzzwords like “peptides” and “microbiome”, traditionally applied to skincare products, confirming that the rising focus on skin microbiome across the entire beauty industry is now also part of the oral care category.

Moon Oral Beauty (US) recently launched its Smile Perfector Duo, a dual-ended pen featuring a teeth whitener and lip brightener. The whitener is formulated with a blend of antioxidants, including soothing lavender oil, whitening strawberry extract and cleansing honeysuckle leaf extract, while the lip treatment combines nourishing vitamin E, cooling peppermint oil and blue mica to cancel out the yellow-toned appearance of teeth.

Elsewhere, Theodent (US) markets a fluoride-free toothpaste made from Rennou (an organic compound sourced from cacao fruit), which promotes rapid remineralisation of tooth enamel on contact. Also in the US, Ojook aims to transform oral care from routine to ritual with its Bamboo Salt Toothpaste. Bamboo salt is used in Korean medicine to promote oral microbiome health and cure gingivitis, gum disease and inflammation. Ojook is betting on clinical research that shows how oral health is closely linked with brain health, leaning into a wider trend emerging in the beauty industry that focuses on the skin-mind connection.

Meanwhile, UK-based Gallinée sells a Prebiotic Toothpaste to support beneficial bacteria in the mouth, whereas its Mouth & Microbiome Supplement features live probiotics and helps prevent ulcer formation.
