Katie BaronA fresh chapter in retail design unfolds this quarter via new store launches spanning the globe in locations as diverse as Oaxaca, Tokyo, São Paulo and London. Key trends include the rise of the brand campus (ultra-multifaceted concept stores), shrines to scent, ‘joytopian’ amusements and breakout play areas, ‘whispered’ tradition, turbocharged testing and personalisation studios, neo nature, and kiosks & reading rooms showcasing the ongoing bibliophilic boom.
Two premium brands this season have engineered large multifaceted spaces facilitating both internal and consumer-facing brand flex: the full brand campus. A total expression of their brand worlds involving making, learning and gathering, they incorporate workshops, repair facilities and teaching academies. Some expose production, letting fans witness craftsmanship first-hand – an increasingly powerful mechanism for luxury brands seeking to affirm their commitment to craft, and justify pricing.

Astute fragrance retailers are borrowing cues from sacred architecture to create spaces encouraging reverence, contemplation and sensory discovery. These worshipful spatial designs, many housing perfumes featuring expensive and rare aromatic materials, range from chapel-like boutiques and public installations with ceremonial flavours to mysterious shrine-like environments – echoing strategies detailed in Ritual-Rallying Venues in Brand Spaces: 11 Trends & Opportunities 26/27.
Annexing the trend for small-scale dopamine hits detailed in Emotional Support via Little Treat Culture in Indulgence Agendas (part of our aforementioned Macro series The New Youthhood), several retailers have deployed amusement arcades and gameplay to bring pleasure-seeking to the shop floor. Skewed towards young audiences, these spaces are emanating from retailers in sports (sneakers), toys & collectibles and beauty.
Creative fashion brands (including streetwear) have been using tradition as a springboard for progressive, often modernist design, with the original source of inspiration quietly and/or innovatively informing the final outcome as a whispered signal rather than a statement of heritage. In some instances, overtly contrasting materials are used to connect a global retail environment to local culture.
Other brands are tapping into the Gen Z-high (but not exclusive) desire for self-expression (49% of American Gen Zers want customised products – PWC, 2025) – with state-of-the-art customisation studios. In these spaces, consumers can actively shape bespoke products through a mix of hands-on crafting, AI-powered recommendations and high-tech production.
Other notable designs this season tap into consumers’ desire for status-enhancing intellectual engagement (see Initiatives Channelling Erudition in The Experiential Elite) via branded reading rooms and newsstand kiosks. These concepts mirror the interest in retail encompassing Deep Listening Destinations (see Brand Spaces 26/27) and can be seen in Bibliophilic Brands: Spaces for Holding Space in Brand Spaces 25/26.
Reverence for nature resurfaced this season as a core theme, with a small suite of brands designing big, awe-inspiring installations (often with a notable sensory quality) to showcase the inspirational pull of the great outdoors. From mounds of gravel to interior concepts referencing mountain ravines, the more intense the better.
