In a major rebound (selling out within three days) after weakened fan interest for the past three years, the Coachella music festival in Indio, California (April 10–12 and 17–19) drew hordes of marketers chasing its young audiences. Need-to-know campaigns tapped into the ever-rising zeal for offline experience and connection, mined lesser-tapped opportunities around the festival journey, and fed the growing hunger for merch and mementos.
Brands tapped into increasing consumer hunger for offline experiences and connections (see our Macro Trend series Spaces: Cultivating Connection), as well as desire to be less digitally immersed (see stats below). Most notably, Pinterest opted to forego social-media-baiting set-ups, asking visitors to lock away phones in order to “experience joy, rather than performing it”.

Astute brands including Airbnb and Google activated beyond Coachella, providing amenities and en route amusements for road-trippers and airport arrivals in a bid to capitalise on the heightened sense of anticipation – and escape the jostle of marketers within the festival zone.
Merch holds increasing appeal for young consumers, eager to embrace physical (versus digital) artefacts of identity (see Identity-Affirming Fourth Space Engagement in Ad Age Next-Gen Marketing Summit 2026) and to reject aesthetic homogeneity via trinkets and other personalised accessories (see our Chaotic Customisation explainer). Gap, Barbie and Justin Bieber’s line Skylrk all lured Coachella crowds with festival-exclusive keepsakes.
