Wellbeing – both of people and the planet – was the key innovation driver at this year’s Dutch Design Week (October 19-27, Eindhoven), themed Real Unreal. Brands, studios and independent designers investigated how real change can be achieved through material innovation, circular production methods and healthy environments – at home, in public spaces and the outdoors – where humans and nature can thrive.
Tapping into recognised methods for healing and calm, including the attention restoration theory, deep breathing and biophilic design, designers are creating innovative interiors products that help restore mental energy. Meanwhile, designs for public spaces and communal activities stimulate interaction and connection between residents.

Dutch Design Week is renowned for its experimental approach to material development from unconventional sources. This year, designers identified ever more unexpected waste streams – to be repurposed into functional and beautiful materials – while finding new applications for underappreciated natural resources.
Designers explore the new creative outcomes that can arise from innovative methods of making. Robotic machinery and 3D printing are incorporated into traditional craft production, while the role of artificial intelligence (AI) as a co-creator is examined, and industrial aesthetics are reinterpreted.
Varying in scale from a building façade to an entire neighbourhood, many projects explore how to make more space for nature within built environments. Meanwhile, restoring natural habitats and protecting animal and plant species from commercial exploitation are themes that resonate among activist-minded designers.
