Rising spending in malls (see below) is driven by resurgent youth interest and experience-anchored centres stretching visits into day trips. We decode growth strategies: malls as youth-empowering creative economies, entertainment upgrades, including spatial cinema and ‘storydoing’ playgrounds, credibility-cultivating festivalisation, destimulating design and ‘slowscapes’, new omni-smart navigation tools, and wellness formats powered by ritual, routine and recreation.
While youth appetites for mall hangouts never entirely dissipated, a rising craving for spaces stemming the ‘connection recession’ (see Fourth Spaces & Off-Feed Scenes) is spurring them to new heights. Progressive malls are engineering commercial ecosystems around creative and content studios (live broadcasting, podcasting, music making) that explicitly support young people’s aspirations (see The Ambition Economy).

Retail-boosting mall entertainment is expanding, dominated by two key emerging camps that relate to our Look Ahead 2027 themes: ‘spatial cinema’, anchored in not just escapist immersion but a sense of shared humanity (see Transcendent Entertainment), and ‘playdate’ spaces and services, which counter the algorithmic efficiency increasingly pervading everyday life (see The Play Strategy).
Other forward-thinking developers and brands are harnessing arts and fashion festival concepts to instil cultural or stylistic kudos, deflecting homogenisation. Arts-centric festivals are particularly relevant for malls wanting to court luxury consumers, who increasingly equate knowledge with status – see New Luxury Dynamics: The Experiential Elite for more.
With 72% of Americans opting to leave a store early because of overstimulation (JLL, 2026), and 60% of global consumers wanting to immerse themselves in nature (Eventbrite, 2025), smart mall developers are engineering increasingly sophisticated biophilic environments, including ‘slowscapes’ (biophilic environments encouraging visitors to pause, rest and observe the natural world around them) – a strategy with proven benefits.
Globally, 53% of visitors to malls, stadiums and galleries experience difficulties navigating them (Mappedin, 2026). Smart malls are eliminating this source of friction with new artificial intelligence (AI)-turbocharged forms of wayfinding – from app-free, kiosk-to-phone directions and find-me tech to easy-access routes and transport-linked directions provided in real time.
New approaches to mall-based sports and wellness that use formats grounded in rituals are also adding major value. The best tap into the booming cognitive economy (see below), routines (making the mall an ideal place to pause workouts, thus creating a halo effect) and communal connection-enabling recreation.
