During the Geneva International Motor Show (February 26 to March 3), French automaker Renault revealed a collection of electric leisure vehicles for mountain, water and snow sports. The savvy collection highlights sports and outdoor pursuits as a commercial boon for a slowing automotive market, particularly with thrill-seeking wealthy consumers.

Renault teamed up with French start-ups in the sports equipment and leisure space to create the five-piece collection. Water-based vessels include a compact sailing boat made with Reverso that can be disassembled into four segments for easier storage and transportation, a hydrofoil surfboard developed with Plume that can reach 35km per hour, and an electric jet ski created with Searider that can reach 77km per hour. Meanwhile, the Moonbikes snowmobile features a chain- and belt-free design for easier maintenance, and the motocross e-bike produced with Evol boasts a 500-watt motor.

The Renault edition of each vehicle pays homage to the launch of the marque’s electric version of its iconic Renault 5, with a punchy yellow finish and the graphic logo depicted on the body panels and handlebars. These design cues create a sense of continuity between the brand’s automotive designs and its sports and leisure collection.

The launch taps into a growing interest in active outdoor pursuits, especially among young wealthy consumers, who rate skiing, yachting and sailing among their favourite pastimes (Henley Global, 2022).
