According to research, children who take holiday snaps and engage with printed photos are more likely to retain positive memories of the experience into adulthood. In response, global tourism company TUI held photography masterclasses at selected TUI BLUE Kids Clubs, equipping holidaymakers aged 3-6 with cameras and offering free prints.

The classes encourage children to shoot the things that feel meaningful and special to them, aiming to build memories that last a lifetime rather than focusing on taking the perfect photo. After the holiday, the children were sent 24 free prints for their family photo albums.

The Mini Memory Makers masterclasses were conceptualised after a study found that 20% of adults look through old photos regularly, and 46% of those aged 25-34 have recreated a favourite childhood photo with friends and family. Additionally, even though over half of adults took holiday photos solely on a smartphone, 20% of respondents claimed that using phones makes them feel less present on the trip and 35% agreed that scrolling through digitals snaps makes them feel less special. In contrast, 63% of the respondents agreed that printed photos held more meaningful memories.

Further, the study revealed that 60% of adults recalled the excitement they had felt when waiting for pictures to be developed. Meanwhile 61% of respondents said that letting children snap their own holiday pictures makes the experience more meaningful for them and 60% believed that children value holiday photos more when they’re actively involved in taking them, rather than just appearing in them. Another 60% claimed that they already get kids involved in holiday photo-taking.

The masterclasses were held over the easter holidays at TUI BLUE Orquidea and TUI BLUE Flamingo Beach in the Canary Islands, and TUI BLUE Aeneas in Cyprus.
