CES 2025: New Agritech Concepts

Agritech concepts stood out at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES, January 7-10, Las Vegas) alongside the consumer-targeted appliances covered in CES 2025: Food Tech. Exhibitors, seeking to address environmental challenges and employee shortages facing the agriculture sector, presented products spanning from eco-conscious indoor farming to on-farm automation.
- Eco-Friendly Indoor Farming: South Korean carbon sequestration company Low Carbon showcased its concept for an indoor farm that pulls carbon dioxide from the air to stimulate photosynthesis (rather than requiring growers to purchase supplemental CO2). Not only does this allow indoor farms to sequester environmental carbon, but adding additional CO2 may also increase plant yield due to a faster rate of photosynthesis.
- Supercharged Growth: Japanese electronics giant Panasonic spotlighted its Novitek spray that uses cyanobacteria to encourage plant growth. When the liquid is sprayed on plants’ leaves, it increases their ability to absorb carbon dioxide – thereby accelerating photosynthesis.

- Automated Agriculture: American manufacturer John Deere, South Korean company Daedong and Japan’s Kubota all shared concepts for automated machinery to streamline maintenance and increase productivity for large farms. John Deere spotlighted two autonomous tractors: one for large-scale farming and another for orchard farming. The large-scale version incorporates 16 cameras in the cab, allowing farmers to step away from the vehicle and still monitor its progress. The orchard tractor, meanwhile, automates the routine of spraying fertiliser and pesticides on tree crops.
Using cameras affixed to a tractor, Daedong’s conceptual AI Agent can assess soil health and plant maturity. It updates farmers on plant health and identifies the ideal harvest time. During harvest, the autonomous tractors can chart the optimal route through the field to avoid other tractors or obstacles.
Alongside autonomous tractors and tech for soil health analysis, Kubota also presented a smart robotic pruner to streamline maintenance (and increase yield) for fruiting plants.
