In this bi-annual report format, we highlight the exciting initiatives, nascent innovation and design developments prompting responsible change, and resourceful creativity, in the fashion industry. In this edition we focus on robust responses to some of sustainable fashion’s biggest challenges: troublesome textiles, an uninspired image and how to leverage the growing global case for ‘local’ and ‘less.’
Sustainable fashion has an image problem, in that it rarely generates aesthetics that are attention grabbing or shout differentiation. However, that’s changing fast, as a new breed of creatives puts a more intense spotlight on the role of responsible materials and upcycling in a better future fashion ecosystem – all seen through the additional lenses of both symbiosis with nature and pop-cultural relevance.

With 71% of consumers now checking fibre content labels to actively avoid synthetic materials (Cotton Incorporated, 2025), the pressure is on to deliver change when it comes to fashion’s toxic textile problem. Ahead of June’s Future Fabrics Expo 2026, we highlight some of the most exciting commercial alternatives to the textile world’s worst offenders and reveal some other exciting developments in the historically polluting active and outdoor field.
