Globally, 48% of babies under six months old are exclusively breastfed, an increase of 10 percentage points over the past decade (WHO, 2023). Nevertheless, facilities for breastfeeding and pumping remain scarce. Stylus highlights three recent campaigns boosting access.
- Work & Mother’s In-Office Facilities: American design company Work & Mother creates private lactation rooms within offices. Intended to evoke a soothing, spa-like environment, the private rooms feature comfortable chairs and refrigerators for milk storage, plus lockers for pumping equipment. The company works with office buildings to identify suitable locations, adapting the format according to each space. The company recently opened suites in New York and Boston, with more to come in San Francisco, Miami and Chicago.
- Air Asia’s Mums-On-Duty Kit: In May 2024, Malaysian airline Air Asia released a nursing kit intended for breastfeeding mothers in operational positions, like pilots and flight attendants. The kit contains both a nursing cover (designed to match the company’s uniforms) and a handbook with practical tips on how to negotiate conversations around breastfeeding at work. The campaign aimed to increase retention among new mothers following internal research showing that flight attendants and pilots felt unsupported by the company in early motherhood.
- Pampers’ Olympic Village Nursery: For the 2024 Paris Olympics, American nappy brand Pampers is hosting a nursery for parent athletes in the Olympic Village. Alongside space for parents to hang out and play with their children, there will be a private space for breastfeeding. For more, see Olympics & Paralympics 2024: 10 Big Ideas for Sports Marketing.
Meanwhile, French athletes who are mothers with young children were given the choice to stay in private hotel rooms near the athlete’s village, an option intended to provide more privacy when breastfeeding.
