Adidas Originals: Xeno Black Pack

Inspired by a snake from South-East Asia, global sportswear giant Adidas has produced a collection of light-activated, colour-changing shoes.

The Xenopeltis snake, best known for its highly iridescent scales, is the inspiration behind the range. The innovative Xeno material transforms from a slightly iridescent matt black surface into a multicoloured rainbow gradient under direct light. Each of the three Black Pack designs features a different stained-glass-shaped snakeskin design.

Xeno is an evolution of the retroreflective 3M material we featured in Interrupted Surfaces – see how this trend has progressed in our Interrupted Surfaces Update.

Responsive materials are becoming increasingly significant as chameleon-like properties provide intrigue and refreshing perspectives. Responsive Pigments and Under the Radar further explore the use of chromic dyes and other transformative materials.
