By 2033, global carbon black production is expected to increase by 23 million tonnes – a process that already contributes to 30 to 40 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. Hoping to find an alternative method for speciality applications, such as beauty pigments, UK-based material and design alchemist The Unseen has revealed a carbon-negative upcycled pigment derived from algae organisms.

As part of its Absorption Collection, featuring a lash-lengthening mascara and long-wearing eyeliner, Algae Black is the world’s first non-toxic sustainable black pigment in beauty, reducing carbon emissions by 200% compared with carbon black. Made in collaboration with eco-friendly pigments and inks specialist Living Ink Technologies (US), upcycled algae waste biomass is used here in place of toxic crude oil, coal or non-renewable resources like iron oxide that are often unethically mined.

“Algae Black is made by subjecting waste algae biomass to a pyrolysis process, burning it without oxygen,” said The Unseen. “This prevents the carbon stored by the algae from turning into carbon dioxide. Instead, the carbon forms a char, serving as a pigment. To achieve substantial carbon reduction, mass-scale production and utilisation of the pigment are necessary.”

The Absorption eyeliner is described as a smooth, smudge-free eye pencil that delivers long-wearing rich colour and a matte finish, while the mascara strengthens and volumises the lashes, increasing their length by 18%.

Innovations like this mark a pivotal shift in cosmetic colour production, showcasing how beauty brands can lead change, present new possibilities, meet consumer demand for eco-friendlier options and set new standards for sustainable colour cosmetics development.
