As British jeweller Alighieri becomes the latest brand to announce the launch of homeware, we dissect this growing trend, which sees fine jewellery designers following the lead of fashion brands and turning their hand to tableware, utensils and home decor.

Influenced by the shapes of prehistoric rock formations, tribal hunting tools and ancient totems, the Alighieri Casa collection comprises cutlery, candlesticks, dishes and napkin rings sand cast in 24kt gold- and sterling-silver-plated brass and stainless steel. Evoking the ritualistic practices of the home, such as lighting candles or setting the dinner table, each ornamental heirloom embodies the tactile fluidity of the brand’s medallion-like pendants.

Though Alighieri’s collection is one of the most expansive jewellery-inspired homeware ranges to go to market, it’s not the first. Danish brand Elhanati and New York-based jeweller Suna Bonometti have also shaken up the status quo of interior design for the home.

Elhanati’s Jardin collection sees gothic floral motifs embellished with black diamonds, while Bonometti’s cutlery is twisted into whimsical golden swirls for the brand’s one-of-a-kind Curls collection. Like Alighieri, these brands imbue their utensils and homeware with the delicate, ornate details and embellishments typical of their refined jewellery designs, challenging the solemnity of classic homeware design with refreshing imagination.

As we explore in The Heartfelt Home, the slower trend cycle of homeware gives fashion designers a prime opportunity to expand their collections out of the wardrobe and reach a broader audience – and fine jewellery designers have taken note. In the mass market, the Zara Home x Collagerie capsule blends the laid-back minimalism of the Spanish brand with the British marketplace’s signature boldness for a striking summer collection, while Swedish fashion brand Arket’s silver-plated and stainless steel tableware offers a more ornate feel akin to that of luxury brands.
