As climate pressures and cultural fragmentation intensify, designers are rethinking the systems, materials and stories that shape everyday life. At Dutch Design Week (October 17-25), themes of regeneration, adaptability, belonging and wonder pointed towards a future where resilience is built through both ecological and emotional connection.
Nature emerged as a defining theme as designers looked to reconnect with seasonal rhythms, lost knowledge, and a deeper sense of place. Less about romance than robustness, the aim is to embed nature’s materials, processes and systems into everyday life, encouraging more caring relationships with our surroundings and promoting climate resilience.

Celebrating the irregular and imperfect, designers embraced production systems that relinquish strict control over final outcomes, allowing materials and chance to dictate the creative process.
Channelling a sense of wonder, designers leaned into childhood imagination, mystical fables and gothic aesthetics to craft emotional, narrative-rich objects.
Emotional resonance was key in the work of designers exploring what it means to live in between cultures, how objects can be vessels for memory and identity, and the role of the home in cultivating a sense of belonging.
