Xbox’s Supportive AI Copilot Pushes Agentic Entertainment Forward
Published 18 March 2025
Marking the latest development in the rise of supportive AI agents in entertainment (see Life in AI: Culture, Creativity & Entertainment), Microsoft is debuting a Copilot for Gaming. The voice-enabled in-game AI-powered assistant for Xbox is designed to support gameplay with gameplay recaps, coaching, and strategy intel.
During the latest official Xbox Podcast – featuring Microsoft’s vice-president of gaming AI, Fatima Kardar – Microsoft announced the copilot is currently available for beta testing to members of Xbox’s Insider programme (with wider rollout details to be announced) and described how its features can improve gameplay.
- Progress Recaps: Tailored to the pain point of gamers feeling lost when they revisit titles they haven’t played in a while, the copilot can reorient gameplay by offering recaps on gamers’ last play sessions and advice on how to progress.
- Lore-Diving Explanations: For fans of Xbox’s historic titles (such as strategy game Age of Empires), users will be able to ask the copilot contextual questions (like “can you tell me about the real Frankish siege of Tyre?”) to learn about the real-world events that inspired games’ lore.
- In-Game Assistance & Coaching: Mirroring the supportive abilities of US tech giant Nvidia’s autonomous AI co-players (see CES 2025: Retail, Media & Gaming), Kardar described an upcoming planned feature (release date TBC) where the copilot could analyse gameplay of shooter titles such as Overwatch and act as an in-game coach, even providing stern “trash talk […] if that’s what you need” to improve gamers’ play strategy.
A softer approach to in-game advice was demonstrated in a proof-of-concept video depicting a first-time Minecraft player. The copilot talks through early-game strategy and locates nearby resources – streamlining players’ gaming experiences by eliminating lengthy tutorial sequences and minimising the need to seek advice from outside the game. - Personalised Game Curation: The copilot also has the ability to source and suggest other games aligned with players’ interests. Kardar foresees future updates where these suggestions could be instinctively tailored to players’ moods to provide hyper-contextualised entertainment.
