Womenswear S/S 24: Global Catwalks Round-Up
Published 15 November 2023
Following our round-up of the four big cities, we’ve analysed what’s trending at other fashion weeks around the globe, with insights from Dubai and Lagos to Barcelona, Copenhagen, Berlin, Shanghai, Tokyo and Seoul as we conclude our coverage of Spring/Summer 2024 catwalk trends and their implications for the high street.
Seeing Red
From the Big Four to Dubai and Lagos via Seoul and Copenhagen, we’re seeing red highlighting as the key bright for everything from dresses to accessories next summer.
Sunny Outlook
The future’s looking bright, with an uplifting palette of vivid sunshine yellows blazing a trail at all fashion’s global hotspots for S/S 24.
A Bouquet of Lilacs
We’re starting to see a new focus on a summery palette of sweet pastels, and the global catwalks have confirmed the ongoing importance of pretty lilac tones as a key colour direction for the season ahead.
Sheer Delight
Barely-there transparencies have emerged as the biggest internationally endorsed fabric direction on this season’s catwalks, with layered sheers creating weightless veiled effects at every major fashion capital and global fashion week.
Network
An alternative, more casual take on the dare-to-bare look sees mesh or crochet hitting the sweet spot to put a fashion spin on the simplest summer tees and tank dresses.
Tulle
A more romantic interpretation of the mood for transparencies sees a focus on tulle creating a sense of weightless volume for the ultimate in feminine dressing.
Heavy Metal
It’s not just the Big Four endorsing metallised finishes as an emerging fabric direction: more localised fashion weeks are also investing in silver and gold as the key currency for S/S 24.
Recycled Denim
Reuse, renew and recycle is the mantra here, with international designers embracing salvaged denim and repurposing it into new fashion silhouettes.
Extremely Distressed
Denim is getting the extremely distressed treatment for the upcoming season, as perfectly imperfect takes sway over the recent mood for clean-cut and true blue.
On Line
Forget last season’s playful cut-about rainbow stripes and get on the straight and narrow for S/S 24 with the understatement of clean vertical lines and simple monochromatic colourways.
In the Spotlight
They may be the most generic of print motifs, but the global catwalks delivered directional new takes on simple spots, with playful gradations, scale and colour mixes and spot-on-spot effects.
In Black & White
The latest round of international fashion weeks confirmed the black-and-white print direction we highlighted in our Big Four trends report, with graphic abstracts, bold placements and a play on typographical motifs.
Well-Placed
Another print trend confirmed on diverse catwalks from Shanghai to Seoul, Tokyo and Lagos is large single-placement motifs making a bold graphic statement.
Traditional Dyeing Techniques
New updates for tie-dye and batik combine traditional techniques with offbeat fabrications like sheer, use unconventional colour mixes, or complement unexpected product areas such as swimwear, tailoring and outerwear.
Retro Sports
Retro-style sportswear hit the more youth-driven catwalks of Seoul and Tokyo, while in Dubai, Lebanese label Emergency Room scored a winner with its savvy street-style sporting looks.
Shirt Tales
One item has remained consistent across the S/S 24 catwalks: the classic white shirt is getting a makeover as the must-have fashion purchase for the season ahead.
Asymmetric
Asymmetric one-sleeved or one-shouldered looks have been a constant throughout the latest round of catwalks, complementing simple sheath or toga dresses and understated tunic tops.
Fashion Fringe
Get ready for next summer’s fringe festival, with everything from fringed fabric to placement trims and sashaying fringed hemlines hitting fashion’s sweet spot for S/S 24.
