

Wikipedia Streetwear Collection Takes Aim at Misinformation

In collaboration with German label Armedangels, the world’s largest free encyclopedia, Wikipedia, has released a logo-laden streetwear collection that highlights both the dangers of misinformation and the importance of free access to knowledge.
As recently explored in The Brief, slogan tees are reigniting interest in protest fashion, as the eye-catching statements double as wearable content in the social media age and give brands and consumers alike an easy way to publicly declare their values.
From slogans like “let’s set knowledge free” and “for fact’s sake” emblazoned across tees, sweatshirts and baseball hats, to printed definitions of words like “equality”, the Wikipedia x Armedangels capsule homes in on the dangers of misinformation as well as the importance of easily accessible, free and reliable facts – which is especially relevant in a time where a reliance on AI can lead to inaccuracies that may go unchecked by readers.
Plus Armedangels – a brand dedicated to sustainability and transparency – provides details on where all of its fabrics are sourced, as well as decarbonisation roadmaps and lifecycle analyses of its products. This specific collection uses 100% recycled materials sourced from Säntis Textiles, and QR codes – which direct wearers to open-source information on climate change and sustainable fashion – are also included in the design of each piece.

With this collection, Wikipedia follows the lead of other recent collaborations like Online Ceramics x Penguin Random House, which was created in response to the mass banning of books across the US and directed proceeds towards the American Library Association’s media literacy programme.
This merging of protest and education (as well as a hint of Gen Z sarcasm) in a fashion capsule is smart, and further highlights the consumer appetite for activism-led collaboration. Plus, it continues to highlight the importance of branded apparel as a vehicle for solidarity and change beyond just the innate novelty factor.
