Stain Resistant Hoodie Challenges Toxic Practices

Published 20 October 2022

British eco fashion pioneer Pangaia’s latest invention is a stain-resistant hoodie. It provides an alternative to harmful, industry-wide manufacturing processes, while tapping into burgeoning consumer trends like longevity, durability and comfort.

The material science company has been at the forefront of design innovation for some time now, thanks to its emphasis on sustainability and practicality. And its newest release is no different. The zip-through hoodie is made from organic cotton and treated with Dropel, a non-toxic finish that makes it repellent to water-based stains. This means that everyday beverages like tea and coffee bead on the garment’s surface if spilt, and can be brushed off.

This hoodie is the latest development in Pangaia’s quest to make sustainable dyes, coatings and finishes more readily available for commercial use, as they are often some of the most harmful and toxic parts of the manufacturing process. Instead of harmful (but widely used) perfluorochemicals, Dropel taps into bio-based formulations to make the jacket stain-resistant. It’s completely free of toxic chemicals and nanoparticles, which are detrimental to the environment when introduced to waterways via wash cycles.

What’s also interesting is the piece of clothing Pangaia chose to launch this innovation with. Hoodies are a comfortable, basic item that many consumers spend days wearing – including, increasingly, at work – and so are regularly at risk of stains, and especially prone to wear and tear. With the Dropel finish, these everyday garments can, in theory, be washed less, thus maintaining their quality and condition for longer.

This is especially important for both brands and consumers, as the industry-wide emphasis on repair and aftercare services amps up, and budget-conscious shoppers continue to prioritise factors like longevity and durability.
