Italian designer Alessandro Michele’s second ready-to-wear collection for Gucci continued the heritage brand’s reinvention for its new eclectic, contemporary luxury consumer.

Michele reinterpreted luxury with a decidedly eccentric collection. Pulling from similar design cues as his first A/W 15-16 show, vintage styling is updated with contemporary fabrics and a clashing colour palette.

Gender Cues: The awkward, oversized pantsuit from A/W 15-16 continues to question traditional gender modes. Ruffles and floral neck fastenings further romanticise masculine cuts.

Granny’s Closet: Granny chic is the prevailing aesthetic. Fur-trimmed, padded housecoats were worn with sheer knee-high stockings. Headscarves offset geeky tortoiseshell frames, while lace detailing and chunky, costume jewellery add a vintage luxe feel to looks.

Folkloric Reinvention: Tiger prints, snake motifs and jewel-encrusted dragonflies are teamed with intricate flora embroidery to lend a folkloric appeal. Gypsy bandanas, ruffled maxi dresses and long, jewel-encrusted earrings similarly reflect a colourful, nomadic eclecticism. See the Design Direction Wilderness, which showcases folkloric ideals across everything from styling to surface pattern and details.
