Copenhagen Fashion Week: A/W 24
Published 09 February 2024
Copenhagen Fashion Week (CFW) delivered womenswear’s first touchpoints for A/W 24, with a strong emphasis on pragmatic ‘real life’ wardrobing and pared-back styling. This sets the stage for a return to tailoring and a ‘less is more’ approach to the season ahead.
Well Red
Here, we celebrate the ongoing evolution of the vivid tomato reds highlighted in Stylus’ recent Pre-Fall 24 Trends Round-Up, with CFW promoting the palette for pragmatic outerwear and statement dresses.
Coffee Break
Rich espresso and cappuccino shades were high on the agenda in Copenhagen, the perfect match for season-ready outerwear and tailoring, as well as being a new colour direction when teamed with the tomato red palette.
Pinstripes
A classic fabric direction sees traditional pinstripes hitting the sweet spot, complementing the season’s return to tailoring, as well as bringing a dressed-up look to more casual items like the thigh-high mini and denim jean.
Leather
Sustainable leather-look fabrics were everywhere in Copenhagen, seen worked as slick understated co-ordinates, and adding a luxe touch to update core classics like the trench.
`Denim
Basic denim took on new resonance at CFW, with classic washed finishes worked into updated Western jacket and midi skirt combos, easy shirtdresses, and – most directionally – relaxed coat shapes.
Splatters & Marble Effect
Copenhagen’s customary focus on print and pattern was put on the back burner this season. Only one key direction emerged, with designers delivering atmospheric abstract splatters and marbled effects with a geological-inspired feel.
Business Like
Fashion’s recent foray into feminine Barbie-Core is being replaced with business-like tailoring, as highlighted in our recent Pre-Fall 24 Trends Round-Up, with the blurring of gender boundaries leading womenswear to draw on classic masculine influences for inspiration.
Back to Basics
The biggest shift to emerge on the CFW runways saw real-life wardrobe basics taking on fashion status in a celebration of a new pared-back approach to styling. Think simple skirt and sweater combos, core knit items, and classics like jeans and the trench coat.
The Trench Update
The season’s focus on updating wardrobe basics gives a new lease of life to items like the classic trench, revamped with fresh design details, relaxed silhouettes, luxe fabrics like leather or satin, and an emphasis on new proportion play.
Sheer Dresses
In direct contradiction to Copenhagen’s new pragmatically understated approach, we saw designers flirt with the sheer tank or lace dress, working in playful contrast to the week’s business-like pinstripes and leathers.
The Leather Trouser
An evolution of a trend highlighted on the recent A/W 24 menswear runways sees womenswear embrace the easy leather trouser as a hot key item for the season ahead, worked in luxe-touch finishes and a season-ready palette of browns and red.
Relaxed Knits
Easy, oversized and playfully textured are the touchpoints for CFW’s knit directions for next winter, delivering the iconic Scandi hygge comfort factor in spades.
