Holographic Chocolate
Switzerland-based company Morphotonix has developed a way to imprint holographic designs onto chocolate without using additives.
Phototonic Chocolate applies light-refracting microstructures onto the surface, achieving a holographic aesthetic. The design is etched into a master metal mould, which is then used to create plastic moulds to shape the chocolate. The company engineers a controlled texture, which allows the holographic design to be injection-moulded onto the surface of the chocolate.
We continue to see designers harnessing the subtle qualities of reflective and refractive materials to create changeable surface finishes for product. For further inspiration, see our Colour Spectrum S/S 16 rationale Shifting Surfaces, which explores technical advances for shimmering iridescence and metallic lustres.
See also New Food Aesthetic and Chocolate Innovation for more on how inventive brands are rethinking edibles and applying technical treatments to inspire high-design confectionery.
This project was spotted at Paris tradeshow Maison & Objet, look out for more coverage coming soon.
