Architectural Surfaces Elevated by Colour, Light & Scent
Published 03 June 2025
The increasing demand for dynamic sensory experiences – as forecast in our Look Ahead 2025 – is infiltrating the construction industry, where manufacturers are reimagining traditional building materials with new qualities and finishes that engage the senses and encourage wellness. We spotlight three inspiring projects that use colour play, light and scent.
- Nuanced Colour Pavers: In Australia, building product manufacturer Brickworks and ceramics brand Mud have joined forces on a limited-edition range of architectural pavers that reimagines porcelain waste.
Pastel-coloured ceramic fragments and imperfect pieces from Mud’s studio processes are carefully crushed into aggregate before being combined with a concrete mix. Thanks to the subtle flecks and colour variations, the terrazzo-like finished product is quietly optimistic with a gentle dynamic quality. - Luminescent Bricks: American manufacturer the Belden Brick Company’s recent launch of decorative glazed bricks is designed to captivate from different angles and in changing light conditions throughout the day – whether seasonal or differing brightnesses.
Available in four greyscale colours, the Luminescent collection features a subtle iridescent finish across a coarse velour-textured base – a pairing that ensures changeable visual interest and depth for both interior and exterior façades. - Scented Terrazzo: Italy’s Fantini Mosaici brings an olfactory dimension to luxury surfaces with its innovative scented terrazzo.
Developed in collaboration with Lisbon-based AB+AC Architects, the material is crafted from a mix of multicoloured marbles, including Rosso Verona and Verde Ming, and infused with natural essences of eucalyptus, incense and wood notes, which release slowly over time.
The product maintains the same compositional and technical qualities as traditional Venetian terrazzo, making it suitable for projects spanning leisure, hospitality, retail and residential spaces. Meanwhile, the sensory element opens up opportunities for other immersive spatial experiences and fragrance brand partnerships.
