In the UK, German discount retailer Lidl has become the first supermarket to incorporate Prevented Ocean Plastic into its water bottles. From July, the retailer’s San Celestino Italian sparkling mineral water bottles will comprise at least 30% Prevented Ocean Plastic, which will save 100 tonnes of plastic from entering the ocean.

The move follows on from the brand’s 2020-launched initiative of using Prevented Ocean Plastic in food packaging for products like fresh fish, breaded poultry, sausages and fresh fruit, reports British grocery retail website Grocery Gazette. This has prevented the equivalent of 15 million plastic bottles from entering the ocean.

Lidl is also setting out to improve the recyclability of its plastic by transitioning to clear caps for its milk range – these are easier to recycle than coloured caps. It will start with changing up the green caps used for its semi-skimmed milk products.
